Welcome
What is Kiwanis?
Kiwanis is an international service organization serving the youth of the world. It was founded in Detroit, Mich., in 1915.
The word “Kiwanis” originally came from an Otchipew American Indian expression, “Nunc Kee-wanis, meaning “we trade” or “we share our talents.” That expression was translated by the early founders of the organization into our first motto “We build.”
In 2005 the organization chose a new motto, “Serving the Children of the World” which has been enhanced by our current saying “Changing the world one child and one community at a time”.
Kiwanis Club of Aiken
The Kiwanis of Club of Aiken is an organization that supports leadership and community service programs in local schools. Although we have programs in elementary, middle and high schools, our most recognizable is the Key Club. Key Clubs are the oldest and largest service organization for high school students in the country.
Our area Key Clubs include chapters at Aiken High School, Midland Valley High School and Silver Bluff High School. Slilver Bluff is our most active and oldest area Key Club chartered in 1987. Midland Valley is our most recent Key Club chartered just last year in December. These clubs build character in students through service and leadership activities.
We award a $1,000 college scholarship to all of our area Key Clubs each spring. As our club grows, so will the outreach to charter more Key Clubs and school service clubs in Aiken County.
In addition to mentoring the schools that have Kiwanis Service Programs, members of the Kiwanis Club of Aiken also volunteer for projects throughout our community including assisting the Salvation Army with its Kettle Campaign and Red Shield Youth Center; renovating spaces at agencies that support at-risk youth; and participating in fundraising activities for organizations that assist our fellow citizens in need.
